Virginia Overcomes Early Jax State Push
Article By: Virginia and Jacksonville State opened their matchup with fireworks, trading early scores in a first quarter full of momentum swings. Jacksonville State struck first after picking off Virginia’s opening drive, capping their possession with a short rushing touchdown. But Virginia quickly responded with a deep touchdown pass and followed up with a methodical drive to take a 14-7 lead. Jacksonville State looked to answer but threw another interception that Virginia turned into points after converting a key 3rd-and-19. A red zone pick gave Jax State a chance to shift the tide, but they couldn’t capitalize. Virginia, meanwhile, stayed aggressive, converting a 4th-and-3 slant for another score to go up 21-7. After a failed Jacksonville State drive, Virginia struck again early in the second quarter, extending their lead to 28-7 and threatening to run away with the game.
Jacksonville State mounted a determined drive to cut the deficit, reaching the half-yard line before being stuffed on 4th-and-goal. That missed opportunity proved costly, as Virginia responded immediately with a 97-yard touchdown—highlighted by a tight end catch and long run that deflated the Jax State defense. Down 35-14, Jacksonville State managed one last scoring drive before Virginia unleashed a quick-strike touchdown, then capitalized on a short possession to score once more before halftime, making it 42-14. The second half saw Virginia take their foot off the gas but remain in control, adding a pair of field goals while shutting out Jacksonville State the rest of the way to close out a dominant 48-14 victory.
