Wyoming Shuts Down Eagles
Article By: The Wyoming Cowboys put on a defensive clinic Saturday afternoon, cruising past Georgia Southern 45-17 at War Memorial Stadium. The Cowboys capitalized on six interceptions, tying a program record and suffocating the Eagles’ offense from start to finish.
Wyoming’s defense stole the spotlight early and never let up. Safety Jevon Davis collected three picks and safety Wyett Ekeler snagged two picks, returning one for a touchdown. The turnovers halted multiple promising Georgia Southern drives and set up the Cowboys with short fields all afternoon.
“It was a total team effort on defense,” said head coach Joe Spro. “The guys were flying around, reading the quarterback’s eyes, and making plays. You don’t get six interceptions without great preparation and execution.”
Offensively, quarterback Evan Svoboda took full advantage of the extra possessions, throwing for 150 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers. Running back Harrison Waylee led the ground attack with 110 yards and his backfield running mate Sam Scott contributed 79 yards and a score.
Georgia Southern’s offense, usually known for its tempo and efficiency, never found its rhythm. Quarterback JC French threw all six of the team’s interceptions and was under pressure all day. The Eagles' only bright spot came in the second quarter when Josh Dallas reeled in a 70-yard touchdown catch.
Wyoming improves to 1-0 on the season and will look to keep the momentum rolling as conference play heats up. Georgia Southern will head back to the Sun Belt looking to regroup after a rough trip west.
