The tale of the turnover as two of them doom the red wovles in this out of conference matchup with the Mean Green.
1st Qtr-
UNT receives the kick and puts together a 12 play drive that eats up 5 and a half minutes of the opening quarter to go up 7-0.
Ark St converts on a third and five as Raynor threads the window to Jackson who goes 70 yards to paydirt. "I think the saftey tipped it but Courtney kept his concentration and made a great catch." 7-7.
UNT took the following kick off 101 yards to get back up a score at 14-7.
2nd Qtr-
Ark St. would go three and out to give the ball back to the Mean Green.
UNT would go three and out as well giving the Red Wolves a shot to tie it up.
Ark St. would get to the North Texas 43 but faced with a 4th and four would punt. The punt would hit the goal line for a touchback.
UNT would go three and out after a nice deflection on third down by saftey Trevian Thomas.
Ark St. would drive to Mean Green territory but a poor decision by Raynor would lead to a pick and give North Texas the ball with just over a minute left in the half.
UNT would take the oppourtunity to go up 10 with a field goal from 34 yards out as time expired. 17-7 at half. "That was brutal, we were driving with a chance to get some points before half and in the blink of an eye we were down 10."
3rd Qtr-
Ark St. would toss another pick trying to make something happen on third and 13 giving UNT all the momentum and the ball already in field goal range with a shot to make it a three score game.
UNT would take a sack on thrid down and have to settle for a 45 yard field goal attempt. The kick was pushed left leaving it at a 10 score game.
Ark St. would put an 8 play drive together but fail to convert a 3rd and 4 as the Mean Green made a great play call and stuffed the screen. Aidan Ellison would miss his 41 yarder just left of the goal post leaving the score at 17-7.
UNT would close out the quarter with three straight plays resulting in first downs.
4th Qtr-
UNT would take a sack on first down and put themselves behind the sticks. They wouldnt recover and be forced to attempt a 49 yarder. The kick was up and missed to the right giving the Red Wolves a shot down 10 with 5 and a half to go.
Ark St. would get over mid field but take a sack leading to a 3rd and 18. Raynor was able to hit Jackson 10 yards down field, a quick cut upfield and drag of a defender lead to a 21 yard gain and a first down. The very next play Corey Rucker would beat his man and make his first catch, this one in the end zone from 18 yards out and tall of a sudden it was a game with 4 minutes to go. 17-14.
UNT would convert a third and 7 and than score from 27 yards out with a minute and a half left to make it a two score game.
Ark St. would get down to the 2 with 44 seconds left. A dropped pass by Rucker put caoch in a tough spot, he made a gutsy call to run and got stopped and was forced to use his last timeout. Ark St. would score on the next play as Ealy got open under the linebackers making it a 24-21 game.
The onside kick would not get over the head of the first line sealing the win for UNT.
Great game coach Drew. Best of luck the rest of the way and look forward to getting another shot.
UNT, 1/3 of the way through S32 has already faced 2 gut check games. The first go round a walk off TD doomed the Mean Green, the second time around UNT would not be denied!!! Pulling out a 24-21 Victory in Denton, Drewwbacca notched his first human win since season 30, and first at UNT.
The box score might suggest that Ark St was the easy winner, but the hidden yardage and T.O. battle were the deciding factors. Drewwbacca managed to own the T.O.P. with a stellar 5.5 minute first quarter drive, but after that the Wolves and Green traded quick TD jabs, with Ark St pulling even at 7, only to watch DT Sheffield return the ensuing kickoff 101 yards to take back the lead!
Multiple missed field goals later both teams felt like they were letting the game slip from their own hands, but both teams buckled up for the 2nd half battle. Ikaika Ragsdale, a seeming guaranteed 100 yd rusher as of late, has now been held in check and under 100 B2B games, however, his rushing was effective and despite only being 4-7 on third down, the threat of Ragsdale breaking a big gain, kept the D just honest enough to let Morris do his thing through the air, and keep UNT drives sustained.
Morris is quietly becoming a solid game manager, for Drewwbacca. His numbers are never gaudy, but he's been able to limit the T.O.'s and make solid reads. The real story for Drewwbacca is the continued defensive improvements. What used to be a defense that would be gashed left/right/center Drewwbacca has found some things that work for the players that UNT has. Any in conference chance Drewwbacca has to either do damage or at least ruin someone else's season, will certainly be dependent upon a continued improvement on the defensive side of the ball.
Shoutout to FBKelly, that was a bad ass game, and he's a great coach.
