Miami OH traveled to Logan, Utah to face the Aggies of Utah State in the season opener. The back and forth game ending with the RedHawks winning it 21-17.
The RedHawks offense was trying to give the game away as quarterback Blaine Gabbert threw four interceptions with one being taken back for a touchdown. Gabbert did an outstanding job running the improve option attack as the RedHawks ran for 248 yards on 39 carries led by halfback Keyon Mozee ran for 140 yards on 22 carries.
Gabbert got scoring going as he took an option keeper for 3 yards and a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. The teams traded turnovers, and on a 3rd and 7, quarterback Bryson Barnes connected with receiver Jack Hestera on a crossing pattern and he outran the defense for a 70+ yard touchdown. Miami then put together an 11 play 81 yard touchdown drive with halfback Kevin Davis (9-64 yards) scored on a 2 yard touchdown with 22 seconds left in the half. Utah State scored last on a 49 yard field goal to make a 14-10 halftime score.
Miami was driving in the 3rd quarter when Jordan Vincent intercepted Gabbert's 3rd interception and returned it for a touchdown and a 17-14 Aggies lead. Miami scored the winning touchdown in the 4th quarter as Gabbert hit receiver Javon Tracy in the endzone for a 12 yard touchdown and a 21-17 lead with 4 minutes to go.
Utah State drove to mid-field. but was unsuccessful on a 4th and 10 at the 40 yard line. Gabbert threw his 4th interception with about 2 minutes 45 seconds left in the game. A couple plays later, Barnes tried to hit a quick screen on a RPO, but cornerback Raion Strader timed a perfect diving interception to end the drive.
Miami would run out the clock after a couple of first downs.
