Notre Dame lined up for the 2nd defense of the battle of Indiana this season, coming off a big rivalry win against Purdue, to claim the Shillelagh Trophy, now matching up against the Indiana Hoosiers. With 2 long-time Notre Dame fans on the sidelines, this is a matchup that has been a couple seasons in the making. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, it was all Notre Dame today.
While the pace of the game was slow and monotonous through the first half, with each team scoring just 1 touchdown (HB J. Love for the Irish and nifty short pass from backup QB Tayven Jackson to Zach Horton for the Hoosiers), and "Money" Mitch Jeter giving the Irish a 3pt lead to head into half time. The whole game opened up in the 2nd half.
Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard got the party started in the 2nd half, finding WR Jordan Faison for a 71 yard TD pass on the first possession of the half. Then it was LB Jack Kiser picking off Indiana QB Kurtis Rourke and returning it 65 yards to extend the Irish lead 17. Rourke was quick to recover however, immediately finding WR Omar Cooper Jr. for a 55yd answer on the Hoosiers next possession, to draw it back within 10, but it was star HB Jeremiyah Love that took over half way through the third, adding 2 touchdowns to put the Hoosiers into a hole. Early in the 4th, on a 3rd a long, the big man, Mitchell Evans got separation without help over the top and took a corner route 65 yards to put the game away and give the Irish a 45-14 victory in the Battle for Indiana!
Coach Reign: "Good game Coach Phoney, looking forward to our annual battles and likely one day seeing you at the helm of Notre Dame. You're a great coach with big things ahead here in the NDL!"
