TULSA, OK — In a matchup between two coaches who know each other like the back of their playbooks, the University of Wyoming came to town and walked away with a methodical, soul-sapping 17–3 win over our Golden Hurricane. And yes, it was every bit as frustrating as the score suggests.

The first half? A glorified staring contest. Tulsa opened with a 13-play drive that chewed clock but only ended in a 29-yard field goal from Seth Morgan. Wyoming answered like clockwork in the second quarter with a field goal of their own—25 yards out from the ever-reliable John Hoyland. That was it. Six points. Forty-five minutes of sleepwalking football, capped by back-to-back punts and offensive futility.

The second half? That’s when the nightmare began. Wyoming’s Harrison Whaley found the end zone late in the third quarter on a five-yard run—one of the few explosive plays of the day. Meanwhile, Tulsa’s offense looked like it was playing underwater. And yes, Cooper Legas, who’s supposed to be leading this show, put on an absolute clinic—on how not to play quarterback. Three interceptions. Fewer than 100 yards passing. No touchdowns—rushing or otherwise. First time this season he’s managed that unfortunate trifecta.

Even when Tulsa’s defense managed to get stops in the fourth quarter, the offense couldn’t do a thing with them. Wyoming capped it off with one final dagger: a one-yard touchdown plunge by, of all people, kicker John Hoyland with 2:11 left on the clock. The kicker. Running it in. That’s the kind of day it was.

For Tulsa fans, it's another depressing chapter in a season that’s starting to feel awfully familiar. Coach Kevin Wilson, a man not short on ideas or experience, might need to rethink who he has under center. Because if Legas keeps serving up performances like this, the fan base might start calling for change louder than the bell tower on campus.

Wyoming Defense Smothers Tulsa

The Wyoming Cowboys leaned on a suffocating defense and a punishing ground game to secure a gritty 17-3 road win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday afternoon at H.A. Chapman Stadium.

Holding Tulsa to just 152 total yards — including a mere 53 on the ground — Wyoming’s defense dictated the pace from the first snap to the final whistle. The Golden Hurricane never found a rhythm, managing only one field goal in the first quarter.

“Our guys played with discipline and edge,” said head coach Joe Spro. “We challenged them to win the line of scrimmage, and they delivered. That’s Cowboy football.”

The Cowboys’ offense didn’t light up the scoreboard, but it didn’t have to. With the game still in reach late in the fourth quarter, sophomore running back Sam Scott delivered the knockout blow — a dazzling 93-yard run that set-up a touchdown plunge by FB Caleb Driskill to give Wyoming a 14-point cushion and crushed any hopes of a Tulsa comeback.

“I saw a crease, hit it, and didn’t look back,” Scott said of his career-long run. “The O-line made it easy.”

Scott finished with 121 rushing yards on just 7 carries, helping Wyoming rack up 206 yards on the ground. Quarterback Evan Svoboda was steady, completing 10-of-16 passes for 141 yards while generally avoiding costly mistakes.

Tulsa quarterback Cooper Legas struggled against the Cowboys’ aggressive front, completing just 13-of-22 passes for 99 yards and throwing three interceptions. Wyoming’s secondary kept the windows tight all game long, with cornerback Tyrecus Davis collecting 8 tackles and an interception.

With the win, Wyoming improves to 2-0 on the season, continuing to build a reputation as a physical team from the Mountain West. Tulsa falls to 2-2, but shouldn't worry too much about their offense as they were scoring over 35 points a game before this one.
