Golden Hurricane Surge Past Lobos in Rival Coach Showdown
In a matchup between familiar coaching foes, the University of New Mexico Lobos traveled to Tulsa to take on the Golden Hurricane in a game that started as a defensive chess match. The first quarter ended in a scoreless standoff, with both teams trading punts and struggling to find rhythm.
But the second quarter brought fireworks. Tulsa quarterback Cooper Legas connected on a 48-yard touchdown strike to Braylon Presley with 6:01 remaining, only for New Mexico to respond minutes later on a 20-yard run by Devin Dampier, tying the game at 7–7.
With just 1:20 left in the half, Presley found daylight again, torching the defense for a 69-yard score from Legas. After a quick Lobos three-and-out, Tulsa marched 11 plays downfield, capped by a five-yard Legas keeper to give the Hurricane a commanding 21–7 halftime lead.
Tulsa opened the third quarter just as strong, grinding out a 13-play drive finished by another Legas rushing touchdown, making it 28–7. A short field goal in the fourth pushed the lead to 31–7 before the Lobos showed signs of life—Eli Sanders broke free for a 75-yard touchdown reception from Dampier. The two-point try failed, leaving the score at 31–13.
The Hurricane answered again, this time on a dazzling 71-yard catch and run by Joseph Williams, Legas’ fifth total touchdown of the day. A final 22-yard field goal by Seth Morgan sealed the deal, giving Tulsa a dominant 41–13 victory.
Tulsa now improves to 2–1 and looks ahead to another battle with a long-time coaching rival as they prepare to face the Wyoming Cowboys next week.
