NDL: S32W7 - Rice (31) at UT San Antonio (42)

42-31 Win fueled by 2Q INTs

Article By: MortTheCow

Following a first quarter struggle, a 28 point, turnover-fueled second quarter would propel the Roadrunners to victory over their rival, the Rice Owls.

First, the Roadrunner defense took matters in to their own hands in the second quarter. With a 7-0 lead, the overconfident Owls sent the offense back on the field for a 4th and goal from the 2, but the playaction didn't work, and linebacker Kendrick Blackshire retreated to the endzone for an INT.

With a boost of confidence, UTSA's Robert Henry turned in to a roadrunner himself, scampering passed the Rice defense on his way to an 80 yard TD to bring things even at 7-7. The Runners weren't done. A quick Rice 3-and-out put the offense back on the field, and QB Brandon Tennison quickly got the ball moving and found DJ Allen for a 16 yard TD strike and a 14-7 lead.

Wash - another 3-and-out by the UTSA defense.
Rinse - the offense takes the field.
Repeat - another TD strike, this time to explosive Mekhi Anderson for 42 yards with 1 min remaining in the half, and a growing 21-7 lead.

With momentum lost and a 14 point deficit, the Owls made a disastrous mistake as Blackshire grabbed his second INT of the game, and the Roadrunners would have yet another shot to score before the end of the first half. On 3rd and inches with 34 seconds remaining, Tennison fired a missile to DeCorian Clark for a 19 yard TD and a 28-7 lead.

On to the third quarter, Tennison and the Roadrunners kept the pedal to the floor, as Mekhi Anderson grabbed his 2nd TD of the day, this time splitting the safeties for a 52 yard score, and now a 35-10 lead.

The Owls would not quit, however. Despite the 25 point deficit, the Owls rallied the offense, putting up 14 points before the Roadrunners could catch their breath, the lead now diminished to 11. But the Owls would get no closer. The teams would trade one more TD a piece, and the Roadrunners would walk away victorious.
