The Miami Hurricanes would travel to Blacksburg, VA in this Week 5 showdown against the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Canes knew they would have to deal with crowd noise early but were hoping they could quiet them as quickly as possible. Virginia Tech would get the ball first and would put together a great drive. Miami would get very lucky as Kyron Drones would miss a wide open TE in the endzone. Instead the Hokies would settle for a field goal to go up 3-0. The offensive line of the Canes would be the story most of the first quarter as Cam Ward and the running game would unable to get much going. The Hokies would take over again after a Miami punt, this time they would go on a 7 play drive again ending in a field goal to go up 6-0. Miami would go 3 and out for the 2nd time in the game giving the ball right back to Virginia Tech. This time Virginia Tech would be able to punch it in on a 5 yard rush from the quarterback, Drones. Virginia Tech would lead 13-0 and things were not looking good for Miami. Miami would get their first, first down of the game, however they would again be pressured and unable to score points. Miami's defense would finally make a stop to get the ball right back to the offense. Miami would finally get the offense rolling, Cam Ward would hit Elijah Arroyo on a 35 yard TD pass to cut the Hokies lead to 13-7. Miami would have another shot at the end of the 2nd quarter, but Ward would underthrow a ball and it would be intercepted. "We really got hit in the mouth to start the game," said Coach Dealer, "lucky for us we were not down by as much as we could have been. With it only 13-7 we felt pretty good heading into the 3rd quarter."
Miami would get the ball to start the 3rd quarter. The Canes would get a great run from Damien Martinez to start the 3rd quarter of 21 yards, but Ward would get picked off on a 3rd down play and the Hokies would be in business. The Canes would almost get a pick 6 but the ball would bounce of the LB's head. The Hokies would make them pay for that as two plays later they would score on a 37 yard receiving touchdown. The 2pt conversion would fail and the Hokies would lead 19-7. Miami would get the ball moving and come up with a couple big plays. The Canes would cap their 8 play drive with a 3 yard rush from Martinez to make it 19-14. The Canes defense would respond as well, forcing the Hokies into a 3 and out. Miami would come out with a great play action call that would get the safety to bite and Ward would hit Arroyo for the 2nd touchdown of the game, this time from 65 yards and a 20-19 lead. On the first play of the 4th quarter, Miami's defense would come up with a huge play. Daryl Porter Jr would pick off the pass and return it 61 yards to go up 27-19. Miami would tack on a field goal after stopping Virginia Tech on a 4th down play to push the lead to 30-19. It looked like Miami was feeling pretty comfortable, by the Hokies would make a great run on of 58 yards to cut the lead to 30-25. Miami would face a big 3rd and 9 with 1:15 left, Ward would hit Chris Johnson Jr for 16 yards to end the game.
"That was a tough game," said Dealer, "we made the plays in the 2nd half that we needed to though and to get out of here with a victory was all that we were hoping for."
