In a duel of rookie head coaches Southern Miss were slow to start but the Golden Eagles found their footing on the offensive side of the ball and scored 28 unanswered before halftime. From there, the offense was able to slow down the game with the run mostly due to the defense which allowed only 156 total yards. They kept Akron out of the red zone from start to finish and forced a turnover to help extend the lead. Lots of missed opportunities to create more turnovers as there were 4 dropped interceptions and will certainly be a focus in this weeks practice as Southern Mississippi host the Blazers in Week 3. Player of the Game, Tate Rodemaker, who threw for 3 touchdowns and boasted a 266.9 passer rating looks to continue his hot start as he leads the Eagles into their final 3 games before conference play.
Two weeks into the season and coach Salty is still hunting for his first collegiate win. Week 2 against Southern Miss turned bad in a hurry. The Zips offense looked very lackluster and unmotivated, which has Coach looking to his Junior QB Ben Finley.
“Ya know in the spring I thought Bullock was playing better, faster and smarter than Ben, but we’re gonna see if Ben can give us a spark after the bye week. We’ve gotta stay on track and move the ball more efficiently and more importantly stop turning the ball over. So we’ll get some work with Ben during the bye week and see if he can give this offense some life”
A bye week early in the season couldn’t come at a better time for the Zips as they look to get some momentum going into MAC play.
