The LSU Tigers opened their season at home against Toledo looking for a solid start on their path to the CFP. With the SEC conference seemingly re-loaded by new coaches, this is a highly anticipated season for the Tigers due to their recent success in conference.
To start the game, LSU faithful were very quickly silenced by a strong script from Toledo as they drove it down for 7. The start QB/RB duo of Nussmeier and Durham took the field and left no doubt that this offense will be one to fear all year long. Durham rushed it in for a TD and with the game tied up the Fightin' Tiger defense decided to show up. Led by the All-American LB duo of Penn III and Perkins Jr (amptly nicknamed the law firm of Penn and Perk), they quickly forced a 3 and out. Returner of the Year WR Zavion Thomas got his hands on the punt return, juked not one, not two, but 5 Toledo defenders and returned it for a 74 yd TD. It was all Tigers the rest of the way as Nussmeier totaled for 244 yds and 3 TDs in the air, Durham for 139 yds and 2 TDs on the ground, and a defense with 2 takeaways.
