In a thrilling college football matchup, Washington State traveled to Marshall University to face the Thundering Herd and found themselves in a hole early on, trailing 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. Despite the slow start, the Cougars managed to rally, showcasing their resilience in a hard-fought defensive struggle.
Quarterback John Mateer was the catalyst for Washington State's comeback, throwing a 27-yard touchdown pass to Parker as time expired in the first half, cutting the deficit and providing a spark for the Cougars. Mateer went on to throw two more touchdown passes, finishing with three total for the game.
However, Marshall proved to be the more opportunistic team. The Thundering Herd consistently came through with timely big plays, especially on offense, when they needed them most. With just 30 seconds remaining in the game, Marshall put together a crucial drive, covering the length of the field and setting up a game-winning field goal.
For Washington State, the defensive struggles continued, leaving much to be desired. Coach LiQ's squad falls to 0-2 to start the season, with concerns mounting about their ability to stop opposing offenses. Marshall’s victory was a testament to their ability to capitalize in clutch moments, while Washington State's defense couldn’t hold up when it mattered most.
In a thrilling matchup that came down to the wire, the Marshall Thundering Herd edged out the Washington State Cougars 24-21 in a hard-fought game that saw explosive offense and key defensive stops.
First Half: Marshall started strong, taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Braylon Braxton was outstanding for the Thundering Herd, passing for 203 yards in the first half alone, including a touchdown to A.J. Turner. The Cougars struggled to get going early but managed to score their first points in the second quarter, with a 7-yard touchdown pass from John Mateer to Cooper Mathers, making it 14-7 at the half.
Second Half: In the third quarter, both teams traded touchdowns. Washington State’s offense began to find its rhythm, with Mateer connecting with Kyle Williams for a 25-yard touchdown pass, but Marshall answered right back with a touchdown pass from Braxton to Tychaun Chapman, extending their lead to 21-14.
The Cougars weren’t done yet. In the fourth quarter, Mateer threw his third touchdown of the game, this time to Kris Hutson, tying the game at 21-21. But despite the Cougars' best efforts, Marshall’s defense tightened up and held strong.
Key Defensive Plays: Marshall’s defense had a standout performance, especially from Deeve Harris, who contributed with 3 sacks and 6 total tackles. The Herd also limited the Cougars’ offense on third downs, forcing Washington State to go just 5-for-12 in those situations. On the other side, the Cougars' defense, led by Wesley Steiner and Taariq Al-Uqdah, pressured Braxton throughout the game, registering 3 sacks and 11 tackles for loss.
The Game-Changer: Late in the fourth quarter, Marshall kicker Rece Verhoff drilled a 21-yard field goal to give the Herd a 24-21 lead. Despite a last-ditch effort from Washington State, including a solid passing performance from John Mateer (16-for-26 for 206 yards, 3 touchdowns), Marshall held on for the win.
Final Thoughts: Marshall’s passing attack, led by Braylon Braxton (30-for-41, 406 yards, 3 TDs), was the difference-maker, as he distributed the ball to a variety of receivers, including Elijah Metcalf and A.J. Turner. Meanwhile, the Cougars’ ground game, with Wayshawn Parker rushing for 128 yards, helped keep them in the game, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the potent Marshall offense and defense.
The Thundering Herd capitalized on Washington State's turnover (an interception) and solid special teams play, including a key punt return by Elijah Metcalf. Despite a strong showing by Washington State, the Herd's offensive balance and defensive resilience secured them the narrow 24-21 victory.
