Coming into this Week 4 matchup, the #19 Hurricanes were looking to get some revenge against the #8 Gamecocks of South Carolina. Miami was hoping to make up for their brutal loss in the S30 CFP and hopefully move to 2-1 on the season. This game would be back and forth through out the game as both teams would put up points. The big problem for the Hurricanes this game were some very bad interceptions. Cam Ward would throw 5 interceptions on the day, the same amount he threw in a Week 1 loss to the Gators. "We have got to stop turning the ball over," said Coach Dealer, "I've got to put Cam in better positions that he doesn't feel like he has to make those types of throws."
The first half would favor the Hurricanes as Cam Ward and Elijah Arroyo would continue their hot connection and combine for 2 TD's in the First Half. The first from 19 yards out and the second on a 93 yard play. The Canes would also tack on a FG from 40 yards out to put their total to 17. The Gamecocks would get 2 touchdowns from Raheim Sanders (2 and 3 yards) to make the halftime score 17-14. "The interception we threw right before the half definitely shifted some momentum," said Dealer, "instead of possibly going down and putting some points on the board to add to our total. We let them get points on the board."
The second half would be a back and forth battle and it looked like at one point the Gamecocks would possibly blow out the Canes after going up 35-24 with 4:20 left in the 4th quarter. However the Canes would only need 4 plays. They would get a big connection from Ward to Xavier Restrepo for 52 yards. Two plays later Ward would find Arroyo for their 3rd TD of the game from 28 yards out and the South Carolina lead would be 35-32. The Miami defense would have to come up with some big plays to get the ball back to the offense. They would force the Gamecocks into a 3 and out and would get the ball back with 2:33 left on the clock. The Canes would put together a great drive and would get the ball down inside the 5. On a 3rd down play Damien Martinez looked like he would walk into the end zone for the lead, however he would be stopped after getting the first down. Miami would then be stuffed on a QB sneak from the 1 yard line. On 2nd down Ward appeared to have Restrepo in the back of the endzone but the throw pushed him out of bounds. On 3rd down Ward would throw his 5th pick of the game and it would be returned for a TD as the Gamecocks would win 41-32. "In hindsight, obviously, I definitely wish we would have tried a run on 2nd down with Martinez," said Dealer, "I think he could have got 1 yard."
Miami looks to rebound next block as they open ACC action with a home game against Virginia Tech and a road game against Cal.
