The defending "national champs" opened their season with a home battle vs a 1-0 SEC school and old friend Coach Doc and Mississippi St.
The Huskies knew they'd be firmly outmatched in talent but tried to do their best to limit mistakes and win the time of possession battle. UConn out possessed Mississippi St 18+ minutes to just over 9 in the game.
UConn, while dominating the time of possession, couldn't get their run game going as Mel Brown ran for under 50 yards on 20+ carries. Vic Rosa busted a long td early to get the lead for UConn, however.
Fagnano, who won the job in the offseason, threw for 300+ and 1 td/1 int in his debut.
The real star of the game was Jayden McDonald who was still upset about his snubbing for the heisman last year. He finished the game with 6 tackles, 2 int's, 1 FF and a TD to continue his impressive run.
