Notre Dame Outruns Nebraska

Article By: ReignOnU

After hearing from the critics regarding last season's scheduling mishaps, Notre Dame decided to open the 31st season of the NDL with tough Big 10 opponents, Nebraska and Michigan. Nebraska kicked of the season by taking the perennial favorite, Coach Jiggy and his new Sooners down to the wire in Wk.1.

The energy used in the big game didn't seem to fully refuel on the Nebraska front line unfortunately. The Notre Dame offensive line had their way with the Blackshirts, as the Irish piled up nearly 30 pancakes throughout the course of this one.

Nebraska stalled out their opening drive, while Notre Dame went on a long journey down the field that used up the remainder of the 1st quarter, then kicked a FG to go up 3-0 on the road to start the 2nd quarter. The luck of the Irish showed through on Nebraska's 2nd possession, as they got stopped on 3rd down to bring up 4th an inches. This led to Notre Dame once again running off a 10 play drive, this time resulting in a 7yd pass from QB Riley Leonard to TE Mitchell Evans.

Nebraska tried to make a quick rally with just 1:26 to go in the half, but Jack Kiser picked off the Raiola pass and the ND offense followed it with a 17yd TD run by HB Jeremiyah Love, to give the Irish a 17-0 lead heading into the half and with the hammer coming out.

Nebraska's defense finally showed up in the 3rd, stalling out the Irish on their bid to bust the game open at the start of the quarter. The Huskers offense started to get rolling a bit, hitting a few nice balls down the field, which opened up the running game a bit. But just as they were reaching the red zone, QB Dominic Raiola misread the RPO and LB Jaylen Sneed snagged it, then took it 79yds for the score, to put the Irish up 24-0.

Notre Dame added another score on a swing pass to Jordan Faison, just as the 3rd quarter was coming to a close, to go up 31-0, which was the final on the day.

Coach Reign: "I feel like the team played a pretty complete game today. We took care of the ball on offense, played under control and that put the pressure on Nebraska to make plays. Getting ahead early was key on the road and the #1 goal coming into the game. My hats off to Coach MGR, because dialing up Oklahoma and Notre Dame to kickoff the season is massive kahunas! Jobu would certainly be proud. Lookout, because Nebraska is battled-tested and going to be a force in the Big 10 this season!"
