Miami traveled to #17 San Diego St for their Week 3 game. The Canes were looking to bounce back after being blanked by the Gators in Week 1. The Canes defense would shut down the opening San Diego St drive as OJ Frederique would pick off the pass near the goal line and return it close to the 20 yard line. Miami's offense would come out looking to score their first points of the season. They would put together a nice 7 play drive that would be finished off with a 37 yard TD pass from Cam Ward to Jacolby George to go up 7-0. The Canes defense would again pick off the Aztecs on the next drive. This time by Jadais Richard. The Canes would put a nice drive together again, but after missing a 3rd down conversions, they would have to settle for a 40 yard field goal. Andres Borregales would miss the kick though, leaving the score at 7-0. "That miss was frustrating," said Coach Dealer, "offense moved down the field and then we blew it on the FG attempt." San Diego St would make them pay as on the very next play they would connect on a 77 yard TD pass to tie the game at 7-7. The Miami offense would again move the ball down the field with a 9 play drive. This time they would be able to get it into the endzone as Ward would hit Elijah Arroyo for a 25 yard score and a 14-7 advantage. The next big drive came with just under a minute remaining until the half. The Canes would get the ball at their own 35 yard line. Six plays later they would be able to score with :04 seconds left on a pass from Ward to Isaiah Horton for a 21-7 halftime lead. "That score before the half was a big play," said Dealer. "Being able to take a two score lead and getting the ball to start the 2nd half was big."
Miami would again be able to move the ball, but this time would stall out and would be forced to settle for a 53 yard field goal. Borregales would again miss as it would just go wide. "We have to work on our FG kicking," said Dealer. "Leaving points off the board is not how you're going to win games." Just like the first missed FG, the San Diego St offense would again make them pay. This time connecting on a 50 yard TD to cut the Canes lead to 21-14. Miami would start the 4th quarter with the ball and would quickly find the end zone. Ward and Arroyo would connect for their 2nd score of the game to take a 28-14 lead. Miami's defense would get a big stop on the next possession and the offense would then be able to run out the clock to win the game and go to 1-1 on the season.

"That was a big road win," said Dealer, "being able to travel into San Diego St and get a W will hopefully propel us into next week's match-up with the #8 South Carolina Gamecocks"
