Jay Ducker celebrating one of his 4 TD'sBearKats survive Kennesaw
Article By: The Sam Houston Bearkats came into Saturday's matchup against Kennesaw State with an unblemished record, but the game proved to be a tough test as they barely escaped Georgia with a 42-38 victory. The win, which pushes the Bearkats to 6-0, was largely propelled by the efforts of senior tailback Jay Ducker, who played a pivotal role in the victory, finishing the game with 174 rushing yards, 100 receiving yards, and a total of 4 touchdowns.
While the offense, led by Ducker, was able to capitalize on some big plays, Sam Houston head coach Larry Bell was far from satisfied with his team's performance. "That was probably our worst showing of the season," Bell admitted after the game. "We made some critical mistakes, especially defensively, and it’s clear we have a lot of work to do. But we’re thankful to escape here with a win. We'll head back to the drawing board, focus on the little things, and get back on track for next week."
The Bearkats’ defense was repeatedly gashed by the Owls’ run game, which seemed to be relentless, especially in the second half. Kennesaw State’s quarterback, along with their running backs, churned out consistent yardage, and it was clear that Sam Houston was struggling to adjust to the physicality of the Owls’ offense. The Bearkats defense held strong in the end and caused a game ending fumble.
However, the Bearkats' offense came through in the clutch, with Ducker showcasing his versatility. Whether running between the tackles, catching passes out of the backfield, or finding the end zone, he proved to be the difference-maker in this wild contest.
Looking ahead, Coach Bell and his team know there’s a lot to clean up before their next game. With their undefeated record intact, Sam Houston returns home next week, where they’ll look to fine-tune their execution and prepare for their next opponent.
"We're 6-0, but we can't get complacent," Bell said. "We'll use this week to reflect, improve, and hopefully come out stronger when we return to our home field. Our goal is to keep this thing moving in the right direction."
Sam Houston’s road victory in Georgia may not have been pretty, but it was an important one as they continue their pursuit of a perfect season. With Jay Ducker leading the way, the Bearkats will look to bounce back from their defensive struggles and put together a more complete performance as the season progresses.
Owls Fall Short
Article By: From the start the Owls run game was rolling. Just 5 plays into the game they amassed over 130 yards and 2 long touchdowns.
But the pass game as usual could not get off the ground.
But with under 2 minutes left Kennesaw State had a chance with the ball to win the game. With 3 seconds left from the 10 yard line Davis attempted scramble fell just short as he was hit and fumbled at the 1 yard line to end the game.
The upstart Owls gave the undefeated Bearkats a game but couldn't get it over the line. With only 4 games left they have far surpassed anyones wildest dreams already at a 5-3 start, but they still want to secure a bowl game .
