The Owls jumped off to an early 14-0 lead at home on the back of a methodical first drive followed by a Liberty turnover.
The first of two big swings in the came came before the half when Liberty stuffed a 4th down attempt from inside the 5 to keep it at 14-7. But the Owls forced a turnover on the kickoff getting back in prime scoring territory but couldnt do much with it settling for a field goal.
The second big swing came with the Owls up 17-14 Liberty took an interception and returned it for a touchdown giving Liberty a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
With the team in its current state opportunities like that cannot be blown, there will not be a ton of games where Kennesaw State is leading early and still has a 10-point second half lead.
After 6 weeks of frustration, near-misses, and self-deprecating post-game quotes, Liberty head coach OldManWobbles finally has something to celebrate as his Flames rallied for a 31-17 victory over Kennesaw State.
"I was beginning to think I'd forgotten how to win," OldManWobbles might have quipped after securing his first victory at Liberty. "Turns out we just needed to spot the other team 14 points to make things interesting."
The Flames showed resilience after falling behind 14-0 early, with a crucial goal-line stand before halftime keeping hope alive. The game's turning point came in the third quarter when Liberty's defense, which had been much-maligned this season, returned an interception for a touchdown to take their first lead.
Kaidon Salter managed the game effectively, completing 10 of 17 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown, while limiting himself to just one interception - a marked improvement from recent weeks. The ground game found its footing with
Quinton Cooley and Austin Henderson combining for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
Treon Sibley emerged as Salter's favorite target, hauling in three catches for 109 yards and a score, while the defense forced two turnovers and held Kennesaw State to just three second-half points.
"We've been practicing our victory formation all season," the coach might have joked. "I was starting to worry those reps were going to waste."
The win improves Liberty to 1-4 (1-1) on the season, and while preseason championship aspirations are long gone, the victory provides a foundation for the program's rebuild under OldManWobbles.
"Who knows?" the coach might have mused post-game. "Maybe we can start a one-game winning streak."
