Utah Unbeaten Run Ends 28-21

Article By: jasonuk

TCU posted 433 yards of offense including 302 through the air, and came up with two critical stops to hand Utah their first loss 28-21 on Wednesday night.

Utah looked poised to tie the game up early at 7-7 when TCU defender Bud Clark made a superhuman interception at the goal line. The Horned Frogs would drive down the field and take a two-touchdown lead, but Utah answered right back and, after forcing a punt, got a 46-yard return from Dijon Stanley to set up the game-tying touchdown.

Utah's defense came up with a huge stop late in the half, as TCU tried to score before time ran out with no timeouts left. A sack saw the clock run out as the teams went in tied.

Utah stalled out on their open drive of the second half, but Jack Bouwmeester pinned TCU inside their one yard line with a beauty of a punt. Unfortunately it didn't matter, as TCU went down the field and scored, with a 50 yard bomb setting up the score.

The Utes then had an unfortunate break, as Stanley was wide open down the sideline on third down but Cam Rising's pass led him out of bounds short of the marker. Had he stayed inbounds he scores easily. Instead, TCU got the ball and drained nearly six minutes off the block to take a 28-14 lead.

The game looked over, but Rising orchestrated a three-play, 84-yard drive culminating in a 69-yard touchdown pass to Dorian Singer.

....Nice.

TCU would be forced to punt on their next possession, setting Utah up with just under three minutes and all their timeouts. But after reaching the TCU 33, they had two plays stopped, including a dropped first down catch on fourth down. TCU would pick up a first down to seal the game.

"That loss is on me," Coach JasonUK said after the game. "We got away from the run far too early, and we had success when we did run it. Those two playcalls late...I should've called timeout. The boys played their tails off."

Utah looks ahead to their Cup game with SMU and a conference tilt with Houston before heading into a needed bye week.
