Same Old Tune, Just With More Cowbell
By Debbie Downer

STARKVILLE, MS – There’s an old saying about winning ugly. Texas A&M is putting that to the test, week in and week out. Sure, the Aggies walked out of Starkville with a 37-17 win over a Mississippi State team that has looked lost all season, but don’t let the score fool you—this wasn’t some dominant performance. This was more like a Bulldog collapse, gift-wrapped with maroon and white ribbons.

Let’s start with the only thing anyone will remember from this game: the never-ending ringing of cowbells that turned this into an endurance test rather than a football game. But even that couldn't distract from the fact that Mississippi State's quarterback spent four quarters in the spirit of holiday giving, handing over four interceptions and a fumble like early Christmas presents for the Aggie defense. One even went back for six—which, let’s be honest, was one of the few exciting moments of the night.

Offensively, Texas A&M was fine, if you define fine as "not actively sabotaging themselves." Marcel Reed threw a grand total of seven passes, completing five for 122 yards and two touchdowns—which, by the way, means he did more damage on two completions to Rueben Owens (2 rec, 52 yards, 1 TD) than most quarterbacks did throwing all game. Speaking of Owens, he once again carried the Aggies on the ground, racking up 135 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries. That’s great and all, but when a team wins a game by 20 points while getting outgained in total yardage (337 to 301), you start to wonder if this was really a win or just a well-timed opponent meltdown.

It certainly wasn’t a statement victory, that’s for sure. The Aggies are now sitting at 5-2 (3-1 SEC), which looks good on paper, until you realize their next four conference games are against LSU, South Carolina, Auburn, and Texas—three of whom are ranked teams. That’s when we’ll know whether this team is actually built for something real or if they’re just padding wins against struggling opponents.

But hey, at least they survived Starkville with their eardrums (mostly) intact and without tripping over their own feet. Baby steps, I guess.

Debbie Downer signing off, bracing for the moment reality smacks this team in the face.
