Washington State hosted San Jose State in a thrilling game that saw both teams battle hard from start to finish. The game kicked off with San Jose State making an early statement, driving down the field and putting up a field goal for a 3-0 lead. Washington State responded quickly, with quarterback John Mateer connecting with Krist Hutson for a touchdown, giving the Cougars a 7-3 advantage.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with San Jose State tying things up at 10-10 before halftime. The tension continued into the second half, as both teams scored once more, leaving the game deadlocked at 17-17 heading into the final quarter.
In a dramatic finish, San Jose State managed to tie the game at 17-17 on a 1-yard run by Chalk with just a minute remaining. But Washington State wasn’t finished. With time winding down, Mateer led a masterful 80-yard drive, connecting on key passes to move the ball downfield. The drive culminated in a spectacular 37-yard touchdown pass to Mateer’s favorite target, Mathers, securing a game-winning touchdown with just seconds left on the clock.
Mateer and Mathers were unstoppable all night, with the quarterback throwing for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns, all to Mathers, who finished with 10 catches on the evening. The victory marked Washington State's first win of the season under new coach xLiQx, and it couldn’t have come at a better time, as the Cougars now shift their focus to their upcoming rivalry game against Washington in the Apple Cup.
San Jose State went to Pullman in hopes of a victory, but ended up on the losing side of the score. The game went back and forth and defense was key at the beginning of the game. SJSU started the game with a long drive to take a 3-0 lead. That was short-lived and Washington State countered with a TD early in the 2nd quarter. Both teams would score before halftime to take the score to 10-10 at the break. SJSU tried to lean on Chalk, but Washington State was able to contain him and hold him under 100 yards of rushing. This meant that SJSU had to rely on the pass and Emmett Brown has been very shaky the beginning of the year. However, he held his own and only threw an INT on his last throw when trying to move down the field with little time and down 7.
Washington State relied on Cooper Mathers and Wayshawn Parker to lead the way. This 1-2 punch was hard to stop and led to the 31-24 victory. "This is a good Washington State Cougar team and we hung tough with them most of the game. This did not lead to a victory, but maybe a moral victory. We still have work to do, but we are moving in the right direction, commented Coach Taruncheel!
GG man! Enjoyed it!
