Nebraska traveled to New Orleans for a crucial non-conference matchup with Tulane. The opening quarter was a thrilling exchange of touchdowns, leaving the score knotted at 14-14. Nebraska aimed to exhaust Tulane's defense with extended drives, while Tulane capitalized on Nebraska's defensive lapses with two long touchdown passes. However, once Nebraska tightened their defense, Tulane struggled to maintain their offensive momentum.
A pivotal interception by Nebraska and a series of stalled drives allowed them to establish a commanding lead by halftime, ramping up the pressure on Tulane. In the third quarter, Nebraska's relentless ground game culminated in another touchdown, widening their lead to 25 points and securing control of the game.
Unfortunately, my internet outage near the end of the third quarter cut short. The game was eventually called off after a protracted lightning delay, as agreed upon by both head coaches.
Tulane-Nebraska began as an offensive race as the first quarter ended 14-14 after two quick, long strikes from Tulane were offset by Nebraska's long, methodolical drive. Hopes would get shattered, however, for the Green Wave during the second quarter.
An interception followed by multiple stalled drives prevented the Tulane offense from reaching the endzone again, only tacking on a field goal during the second quarter. Nebraska, on the other hand, took advantage of Tulane's mishaps and mismatched line talent to create solid drive after drive resulting in touchdowns. The score would be 35-17 by the end of the half.
Nebraska managed to tack on another touchdown before an unexpected hurricane tore through New Orleans, forcing all players and personnel to evacuate. Upon reconvening, Tulane agreed to concede the matchup at 42-17 in return for not repeating such a draining blowout. The teams agreed to generally make up statistics and keep the score as the final.
On to conference play.
