The South Alabama Jaguars showed grit and determination in a dramatic 30-24 comeback victory over the UNLV Rebels. After a slow start and trailing 24-7 at halftime, the Jaguars roared back with a dominating second-half performance, shutting out the Rebels while scoring 23 unanswered points.
Quarterback Gio Lopez led the charge, throwing for 185 yards and a crucial touchdown. The Jaguars’ rushing attack added 132 yards, balancing the offense and wearing down UNLV’s defense. South Alabama’s defense turned the tide, forcing five turnovers, including four interceptions, to neutralize the Rebels’ early momentum.
This victory showcased South Alabama’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity, setting the tone for a season full of promise.
The Runnin Rebels played a pretty good 1st half in this game, but faltered in the 2nd half, shows the Head Coaching needs a new direction. Rebels were dealt a huge blow when starting quarterback Sluka left the program due to NIL issues with money, leaving the starting quarterback duties to Cameron Friels, which is the third string qb, but the fault is not on him, it is the head coaching. Should of just continued to run the ball, but three interceptions, and a huge fumble proved costly as the Jaguars came all the way back and won 30-24. Rebels were shutout in the 2nd half, and the Rebels could not run or pass the ball, which was surprising, but hats off to the resiliency of South Alabama, give them air, and they have a chance. Head Coach Black Rain needs to go back to the drawing board if he wants to continue to coach this Rebels team.
