The opening quarter saw two teams feeling each other out. Well actually it saw one team dominating the rock, converting 4 third downs and finally putting it in after a 5 minutes drive that rolled into the second quarter. Northwestern would counter with a three and out as the stop pattern was an inch short of the sticks. Teh defense would stand tall and force a punt, giving the Wildacts the ball with just under 3 minutes left in the half. They would drive down to the Sundevils 17 where Jack Lausch would make a piss poor throw that hit his back in the cleats as he was wide open along the sideline. A 34 yard field goal would make it 7-3 at half.
The D would step up with a big pick six on the first play of the seconf half as Devin Turner would step in front of the corner route at mid field and scamper across the field to put his team up 10-7.
The Wildcat D would hold strong and force the first punt for the Sundevils, however a fluky muffed punt gave the ball right back to Arizona St at the Wildcat 22. The defense again stayed strong and forced a fourth down at the 8. Arrizona St. would take the 3 and tie it up at 10 a piece.
Northwestern would put a nice drive together and score on a 3 yard pass to Duke Olges to go up 17-10 with 3 minutes to go.
Jeff Sims would not be phased and after two big plays had his team at the wildcat 6. He would hit a nice out pattern for the score to tie it up 17 all, with 1:57 left in the game. Northwestern would drive down to the Arizona St. 39 when Lausch would force a ball into coverage and get picked off, setting the Sundevils up with 26 seconds left at their own 32. With the defense gassed coach Kelly could only hope for a few big stops and over time but Devin Turner would step infront of a deep ball and return it 22 yards to the Sundevils 28, setting his team up for a shot to win it. After two runs to get some yards and get the ball into the middle of the field. Jack Olsen would send the game winner through from 32 yards out.
Great game Priest, enjoyed the ups and downs. Best of luck the rest of the season.
In a thrilling showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats, Arizona State University (ASU) suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Northwestern University on Saturday, with a final score of 20-17. The game, played at Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois, showcased both teams’ resilience and determination, but it ultimately came down to a nail-biting finish.
With the score tied at 17 late in the fourth quarter Northwestern had the ball and was driving down the field. The ASU defense stepped up and picked off a pass from the Northwestern to give them a chance to win the game. ASU then returned the favor by throwing an interception and Northwestern returned it back into field goal range. A couple of plays later with 3 second left on the clock the Wildcats lined up for what was the game winning field goal as time expired.
The loss was a tough pill to swallow for ASU, who had hoped to build momentum in their season. Head coach priest19 expressed disappointment but emphasized the need to learn from the experience. “We fought hard and showed a lot of heart, but we have to be more disciplined and execute better, especially in critical moments,” he said. Both teams will need to regroup as they look ahead to their respective schedules. ASU will aim to bounce back in their next matchup, focusing on refining their game plan and execution.
