For the 2nd straight season Coach Vegas opens up Block 1 in the NDL taking on his old pal Chase. This season both Coaches are in new places, Vegas in Waco with the Baylor Bears, and Chase back at VA Tech, where he is only meant to be.
Since Chase travelled to Doyt Perry last year with his Sun Devils, the Bears had their hands full having to head to Lane Stadium in Week 1 to take take on the Hokies as this heated rivalry continues.
This game was tight throughout the entire first half with both teams scoring on their opening drives, and VT breaking serve after a great INT by their LB dropping into covg. However they had to settle for a FG to take the 10-7 lead. The Bears and Hokies would trade TD 's with the score at 21-17 just before the half, VT trotted out their kicker for a 60 yarder that was dead center but just fell short. BU Leads 21-17 at the break.
Both teams sputtered to start the 3rd, but BU continued to clamp down defensively. forcing 3 second half turnovers, while playing safe and sound football offensively. The Bears pulled away as they were up 3 scores already when Jeremy Evans picked off the crossing route for a pick six to all but seal the game for Baylor.
After the game, Coach Vegas applauded his players as well as VTY;'s efforts for a "Rise and Shine" type game kicking off at 5am PST. Baylor was able to knock off the big favorite in the game 42-24, and look forward to heading back to BGSU in week 2 and then off to Play CU and familiar Foe Coach Canady
Today marked the long awaited return of Coach VT to Blacksburg. The last time we saw a Coach VT led program here, they were walking out with real hardware. Sweeping the National Title & Cup Championship in the same season leaves a fan base wanting more. That in mind, the anticipation of today...ran into a buzzsaw named Coach Vegas! A long time rival...
Baylor claimed a 42-24 victory over Virginia Tech, leaning on an efficient passing game led by quarterback Dequan Finn and key defensive plays that forced crucial turnovers.
Finn had a standout performance, completing 14-of-20 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns, despite throwing one interception. His steady leadership allowed Baylor to rack up 453 yards of total offense, with 356 yards coming through the air. Virginia Tech struggled to contain Baylor’s aerial attack, and despite their own offensive success, it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Bears.
Virginia Tech’s offense, which generated 345 total yards, was led by wide receiver Ali Jennings, who had a standout game with six catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns. However, the Hokies couldn’t capitalize on their red-zone opportunities, settling for four field goals and just one touchdown.
Turnovers were a decisive factor, as Baylor’s defense forced three critical turnovers, including an interception that shifted momentum in their favor. Virginia Tech struggled with ball security, and the Bears took full advantage, playing a clean game with no fumbles or interceptions.
Baylor was efficient in the red zone, converting all three of their trips into touchdowns, while Virginia Tech managed only one red-zone touchdown, settling for field goals on multiple occasions. Both teams were similar in their third-down conversions, with Baylor going 4-of-8 and Virginia Tech 4-of-10, but the Hokies’ missed opportunities on fourth downs proved costly.
In special teams, Baylor had a solid day with 34 kick return yards and a 13-yard punt return, while Virginia Tech did not register any significant returns.
Despite Virginia Tech having a slight advantage in time of possession at 14:48 compared to Baylor’s 13:12, it was Baylor’s ability to make big plays and convert in the red zone that sealed the win.
