Bulls Stampede to Bowl Eligibility with Gritty Win Over Rice

The University of South Florida Bulls completed an impressive late-season turnaround, defeating the Rice Owls 24-14 at Raymond James Stadium in Week 14 to secure bowl eligibility. After a rocky 2-5 start, the Bulls roared back, winning four of their last five games to finish the season 6-6. While the season didn’t unfold as head coach USMarine initially envisioned, the team’s resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to the program's progress.

“This group has shown incredible heart and fight,” said Coach Marine in the postgame press conference. “I couldn’t be prouder of how we finished. It’s not about how you start; it’s about how you finish, and these players never quit.”

First Half: A Defensive Standoff
The game against Rice, who entered at 6-4 overall and 5-1 in Conference USA, began as a defensive battle. Neither team could find an offensive rhythm, with punt after punt dominating the first two quarters. The Owls managed the only score of the first half on a late second-quarter touchdown, taking a slim 7-0 lead into halftime.

Second Half: Bulls Take Control
USF came out of the locker room with renewed energy, fueled by a halftime speech from Coach Marine that emphasized fundamentals and seizing the moment. The Bulls scored 10 points in the third quarter, sparked by a methodical drive capped by a short touchdown pass. Their defense also stepped up, forcing Rice to punt twice and setting the tone for the final period.

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to USF. The Bulls scored two quick touchdowns, one on a 65-yard bomb and another following a key interception deep in Rice territory. The Owls turned the ball over twice in the fourth quarter, sealing their fate and propelling the Bulls to a comfortable 24-7 victory.

Season Recap: Resilience in Action
This win epitomized the grit that USF displayed throughout the second half of the season. While the campaign began with struggles in consistency and execution, the team found its identity in November. The Bulls' bowl eligibility marks a significant milestone for a program that has been fighting to establish itself as a contender in a competitive college football landscape.

Standout players from the season included dynamic running back Nay'Quan Wright, who led the offense with over 1,000 total yards, and linebacker Jhalyn Shuler, whose leadership anchored the defense.

What’s Next for Coach Marine?
Despite the thrilling conclusion to the season, speculation lingers about the future of Coach Marine at USF. While he has been instrumental in revitalizing the program’s culture, rumors persist about potential offers from other schools or a possible program shakeup.

When asked about his future, Marine remained focused on the present. “Right now, it’s about celebrating this team and what they’ve accomplished. We’ll deal with everything else in time.”

As the Bulls await their bowl assignment, fans can take pride in how their team turned a challenging season into a memorable one. Regardless of what the future holds for the program, this year’s squad will be remembered for its relentless determination and ability to finish strong.

In a hard-fought defensive battle, the Rice Owls fell to the USF Bulls with a final score of 24-14 on Friday. The game saw both teams struggling to gain an edge in the first half, with Rice having difficulty converting on third downs. They led 7-0, but it felt like there were many missed opportunities.

Running back Dean Connors was a bright spot for the Owls, rushing for 100 yards on 22 carries. However, he was unable to dominate the game as he had in previous matchups. “We just could never find a rhythm, and the USF defense was tough as nails,” said Coach Doodee. He added, “We couldn’t force any turnovers. Our secondary looked sluggish.”

This game marked the end of the season for Rice, and uncertainty looms over Coach Doodee’s future with the team. “I love these guys, but I may have taken them as far as I can. It may be time for a new challenge,” he remarked.

Quarterback EJ Warner had an efficient game overall but threw two crucial interceptions in the second half, which hindered Rice’s comeback efforts.

Despite their efforts, the Owls couldn’t overcome the Bulls’ strong defense and timely plays. The loss leaves Rice reflecting on a challenging season and looking ahead to potential changes in the offseason.
