What a way to end the season. The Gophers were trying to give Coach Taruncheel a victory and they ended up losing the game in a crazy fashion. Wisconsin played tough throughout the entire first half. They could not be stopped and Minnesota could not get their running game going. Wisconsin took a 20-3 lead at the half. The 3rd quarter saw Minnesota intercept the ball and take it back for 6 to make it 20-10. Then the 4th quarter happened and it was a crazy quarter. Minnesota was able to strike on a deep pass play to cut the lead to 20-17. Wisconsin then answered on a long drive to go up 27-17. Minnesota was short on time (2:00) and was able to throw a pass in the end zone. At first it was ruled incomplete, but the booth review changed it and a touchdown was given. This made the score 27-24 with 1:30 left in the game. A successful onside kick was made and Minnesota started to move the ball down the field. Brosmer connected in the end zone to put the Gophers up 31-27 with about 40 seconds to play. This is where it gets interesting. Wisconsin drops back to throw and it was intercepted by the Gophers. The defender was looking to go down, but a big hit jarred the ball out and Wisconsin picked it up and took it to the house to earn the 34-31 victory.
It was another dramatic and hard fought battle for the Paul Bunyan Axe as Wisconsin traveled to their long time rival Gophers to take them on for the hundred-and-something time.
Wisconsin game out firing, defense was dominant and they took a 20-3 lead going into half while also getting the ball back. It was a crucial mistake that would allow Minnesota back into it, as Braden Locke throw a telegraphed pick six to let the Gopher back in the door.
Wisconsin has been good at limiting turnover this season and not letting INT break their backs after the first 2 weeks, but this one made it tough and killed momentum for the Badgers.
From there, the Gophers got stops and were able to put themselves within 10 with 3 minutes to go. Wisconsin went on a heck of a drive to go up 27-17, but Minnesota stormed back to score with 1:46. With all 3 timeouts, the gophs decided to onside kick, which paid off handsomely.
Minnesota got the outside kick, and went down to score as all of a sudden that dominant defense could not stop the momentum that took over and the crowd that was into it. They took the lead late 31-27.
Braden Locke throw a terrible terrible pass for an INT which looked like it had sealed the deal, but wait a minute... Minnesota did not go down, and the Badgers got an inside fumble forced on a rage hit stick smash by coach RB, which chaos then unsued. CJ Williams picked up the fumble, and 62 yards later housed the TD to win the game effectively. Preston Zachman sealed it with an INT and the Badgers steal the axe back.
