DALLAS, TEXAS -- The SMU Mustangs passed their final test before a big showdown with the California Golden Bears next week that will determine if the SMU Mustangs return to the ACC Championship game for the second season in a row.
The UVA Cavaliers proved to be formidable, gashing the SMU defense with big plays to keep pace with SMU in a back and forth first half.
Leading 31-21 after an RJ Maryland score, the SMU defense finally emerged and snagged an interception with just seconds left in the half. This allowed SMU K Collin Rogers to hit a field goal to extend the lead to 34-21. In total, Rogers would hit five field goals on the day, including his second from 50+ yards.
In the second half SMU would continue to swarm defensively snagging four more interceptions for five total. The SMU defense has now intercepted 37 passes in 11 games thus far this season.
By the end of the game, SMU HB Derrick McFall would become the fourth SMU RB to find the end zone this season as the freshman broke free untouched for a 43 yard jaunt to put some added distance between the two teams with more than three minutes left in the game.
SMU exceeded 200 yards rushing and passing for the third time this season after previously accomplishing the feat at Florida State and at Pittsburgh.
SMU (8-3, 6-1) will now head to Berkeley, California for a showdown with a fellow conference leader that will determine if the SMU Mustangs head back to Charlotte to defend their S29 ACC Championship.
