Purdue Stuns Everyone

Article By: razorback44

In one of the more baffling moments of the Boilermakers season, QB Hudson Card threw a pass directly at a Michigan State LB who was standing 5 feet away as opposed to either of the two wide open wide receives he had crossing the field in front of him. It's not known if he just got confused and threw to the wrong person or if he potentially had some sort of wager on Michigan State going to the conference championship game. Message boards across the Big 10 ran with that conspiracy within moments of the ill-fated throw.

Purdue was down 31-21 at the time, having just given up a single play 79-yard rushing touchdown to Michigan State and were trying to stay in the game. Card did a great job navigating down the field under pressure and completed back-to-back 20 plus yard passes prior to the head scratcher. Purdue was well within field goal rang and had no reason to press anything, so their coach called a conservative pass play on first down hoping to steal a few yards from a Spartans defense that may have been expecting run and potentially caught in a blitz call. Instead, Michigan State dropped back in to a full zone coverage and Card looked immediately rattled. You could see him look left, look right, look left again and then turn and face the Michigan State LB and fire the ball directly at him. There was a brief pause and stunned silence as the Spartan LB could visibly not understand why there was a ball in his hands. However, he quickly shook off the confusion and broke untouched 80 yards from the game breaking score.

The costly mistake buried the Boilermakers as it put Michigan State up 38-21 and any hopes of Purdue making a game of it were gone. While they were heavy favorites to lose, for 2.5 quarters Purdue made a game of it and had Big 10 country on edge.

Purdue falls to 4-6 on the season and has no room for error in their last two games to try to make a bowl game. That won't be an easy task as their remaining games are against Nebraska and Ohio State.

Gg Rohk and good luck in the Championship!
