Head Coach Black Rain knew the running game was the main focus of the San Diego State offense, and his defense knew it was coming, sometimes even knew the direction, and the offense line still blocked his linebackers. Head Coach Black Rain knew several plays were going to be tosses, sweeps, dives, stretches, and his linebackers were in position, then bam, a lineman or two would pave the wave with key blocks, and RB Marquez Cooper would break it open to the house. The Rebels had enough of Jeantty at Boise State, but Cooper is fast as hell, and he made the Rebels defense looked slow, and Cooper looked like he was shot out of a cannon, his speed was amazing. All Head Coach Black Rain hoped for was to slow down Cooper and the Aztecs offense, but that gameplan did not work after Rebels QB Friel threw a couple of underthrown interceptions, but after looking at the replay, the Aztecs defensive players took some great angles, and grabbed two interceptions where UNLV QB Cameron Friel attempted to fit into a tight window, and it did not work. Sometimes, the throw has to be a dart or perfect to get that pass over the defender, but if you underthrow it, it will get intercepted. He wanted to throw over the heads of those two defenders, but could not throw it correctly, thus resulting in three total interceptions. Credit goes to the Aztec defense!, Rebels have to figure out what to do at quarterback for the future due to the starting quarterback leaving the school for the year over NIL issues, resulting in UNLV scrambling to find a replacement. Rebels move onto the Spartans of San Jose State at Allegiant Stadium.
In a game of old NDL Heads, The SDSU Aztecs Defeated Rival, UNLV Rebels 45-17.
Both teams approached the game with running on their minds... The difference is The Aztecs suceeded, running 37 times for 255 yards, while the Rebels did not 22 carries 71 yards.
The Rebels did have momentum early, scoring on a balanced attack drive making it 7-0 but struggled when they had to lean on the pass game Throwing 3 interceptions which led to a momentum shift and opened up the gates for the aztecs to pull away.
Conference Player of the Year canidate Marquez Cooper led the way with 20 carries 179 yards and 2 touchdowns while backfield mate Kenan Christon ran for 57 yards and 1 TD.
The Aztecs Defense were led by Eric Butler who had a big play on an interception returned for a touchdown.
For the Rebels, when not throwing interceptions, Cameron Friel had himself a game throwing 24 times, 14 completions and 2 td (and 3 ints).
Coach Z was complimentary of the opposing coach after the game: "The score doesnt reflect how close these teams are. Those guys are well coached, Black Rain is a legend we respect. We dont anticipate this kind of success in the future ..." GG Coach BR
