Utes Lose Holy War, Ruin Season

Article By: PacksyD

Provo, UT (AP) - In a hard-fought matchup, the Utah Utes faced off against the BYU Cougars, ultimately falling 42-31 in a high-scoring, action-packed game. Utah's offense was led by quarterback Cameron Rising, who threw for 314 yards on 21 completions, with 3 touchdowns but also 4 interceptions, which proved costly. Rising's top target was Brant Kuithe, who caught 8 passes for 149 yards and 3 touchdowns, showcasing his playmaking ability with a long reception of 80 yards. Micah Bernard had a strong performance on the ground, rushing for 122 yards and 1 touchdown, while Dijon Stanley added 25 yards from 7 carries.

Utah's offensive line struggled at times, allowing 2 sacks despite a decent 5.7 yards per carry rushing average. Defensively, the Utes had trouble containing BYU's offense, with linebacker Karene Reid and safety Zemaiah Vaughn both leading the team in tackles, each totaling 8. The Utes' defense forced 1 interception, but they couldn't generate the pressure necessary to halt BYU's prolific attack.

On special teams, Cole Becker was perfect, hitting 1 field goal and 4 extra points, while punter Jack Bouwmeester averaged 40 yards per punt with 1 inside the 20. Despite strong individual performances from Kuithe and Bernard, and a solid defensive effort from Reid and Vaughn, Utah couldn’t overcome the turnover deficit and BYU’s explosive second-half offense. The Utes struggled in the red zone, converting just 1 out of 4 opportunities, while BYU capitalized on 5 of 6 red zone trips, highlighting a key difference in execution between the two teams. With a late-game collapse in the fourth quarter, Utah’s hopes for a comeback were dashed, as BYU's offense controlled the game and sealed the win with a dominant final period.
