The Rice Owls took home an important win on Monday night, defeating the Memphis Tigers 34-10 behind a steady running game and winning the turnover battle.
"After losing to Tulane, we knew this game was important, and we're fortunate it was at home. We tried to show Memphis some Houston hospitality, and hopefully our hospitality team kept them out a little too late last night," said Coach Doodee.
After a tight first quarter with some important stops and an impressive first drive by Memphis, Rice began to take advantage of some sluggish play by the Memphis players. They were able to score three touchdowns in the second quarter, one a 52 yard rush by HB Dean Connors, a pick six by Max Ahoia, and a TD pass from EJ Warner to TE Biden Green with :12 seconds left to take a 24-7 lead at halftime.
"That touchdown before halftime really lifted our spirits, and our o-line and d-line responded in the second half with some great control. We continued to get some big stops and took advantage. I feel like that was the turning point in the game."
The win keeps Rice in the conversation for an AAC title shot, but still must play Navy, USF, and UAB to finish the season.
"I'm just interested in the next game," said Doodee. "We have too much work to do to even look at the standings."
GG MGR, sorry bout the lag. Let's play again soon!
