Purdue Rallies For Win

Article By: razorback44

Purdue broke open a tight game in the 3rd quarter to put enough cushion between them and Northwestern to pull out a huge win in Evanston. The Boiler Makers needed a win to keep their extremely slim hope at a bowl game alive. It looked like it might not happen though after a first half that saw Northwestern stifle multiple Purdue drives and take a 7-3 lead into the half.

After missing a field goal from the 1-yard line to end the first half, Coach Razor decided to take a shot at the start of the 2nd half and see if they quick tone down a rowdy Northwestern crowd a bit. The gutsy call worked at QB Hudson Card hit WR CJ Smith for a huge 62-yard completion that set up the Boiler Makers first TD of the game one play later. That gave Purdue the 10-7 lead and one that they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

While there run game was stopped time and time again by a quick Wildcats defense, the Purdue OC was able to scheme WRs open finally in the second half that kept the chains moving time and again. A pick 6 near the end of the quarter was the back breaker that Purdue needed and allowed them to take a 28-7 lead into the final period.

The fourth quarter played out more like the first half and the two teams were deadlocked in trading scores throughout the period. There was just enough cushion though that Northwestern had to burn too much time off the clock to catch up. It made for a lucky break for the Boiler Makers as it looked like Northwestern was finally starting to click on offense and drove down the field with easy twice to get the tally to 35-21. An onside kick with approximately 1:10 left was recovered by Purdue and the Boiler Makers were able to kneel out the clock from there.

It was a much-needed win by Purdue and moved them to 3-5 on the season and 3-2 in conference. The last second turnover against Oklahoma State continues to come back and haunt the Boiler Makers as they can't help but wonder what could have been if they just kept the ball on the ground instead of attempting the pass.

Great game man and best of luck the rest of the way!
