SDSU gets Big Win over Boise
Article By: In a showdown between two undefeated teams in conference play, the San Diego State Aztecs came out on top with a dramatic 31-28 victory over Boise State. The win handed the Aztecs a crucial victory in the early race for the conference title
Both teams entered the contest with impressive rushing offenses, ranking #1 and #2 in the nation, respectively. The game did not disappoint, as both teams delivered explosive runs that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
San Diego State’s offense was led by standout running back Marquez Cooper, who ran for 166 yards and three touchdowns. His performance helped the Aztecs amass 230 rushing yards as a team. Meanwhile, Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty put on an incredible display of his own, rushing for 172 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Broncos’ ground attack, which totaled 260 yards on the day.
The game was back and forth throughout with likely the team with the ball last, taking the W.
With the game tied at 28 with 2+ minutes to go, the Aztecs drove 61 yards on 8 plays, setting themselves up for a game winning fg chance.
Kicker Gabriel Plascencia, with nerves of steel, drilled a 31-yard field goal as time expired to give SDSU a 31-28 WIN
It was a showcase of run games tonight at SDSUBroncos lose on late FG as time expires
Article By: Coming in unranked and attempting to make a name for themselves, Coach Roc and the Broncos had a chance to make a statement against the #14 Aztecs. Despite playing nearly flawless ball on offense, there were two key plays that the Broncos would likely love to have back. Early in the 2nd quarter, the Broncos were driving in Aztec territory and came up short on a 4th & 2. Granted Dalmas had struggled massively in his kicking game so a 57 yarder likely would not have helped things. That said Ashton Jeanty was mere inches from converting but was not given the spot and thus the fragile momentum built by the Broncos at that point vanished. Though up 14-7, the Broncos could not play keep away long enough.
After tying the game with entirely too much time left. Coach ZZ and the Aztecs did what they did best, move the ball quickly and effectively, setting up a go-ahead FG as time expired to likely send the Aztecs to a conference championship. With all the steep competition in the conference, one loss likely means you're out of a championship this year, which is unfortunate as BSU had seemingly found their stride after a couple of tough Power 4 matchups to start the season.
That said, Jeanty still got his Jeanty on and is in a dog fight with Workhorse Stud Kaleb Johnson in a race to the D1 Conference Rushing Title. Jeanty is currently 270 yards behind, but also has one more game to play than Johnson. Coach Roc and the Broncos will look for some silver lining as they are likely out of the conference championship even if they win out. When Coach Roc was asked how they feel he simply said 'Playing with house money now'. Not entirely sure what that means, but I guess we'll see.
