In Week 9, Miami would travel to Tallahassee to take on rival Florida St. Miami was looking to keep their undefeated record in ACC play but rivalry games are always tough. The first quarter would not produce much action as both defenses were making their presence known. Florida St would put together a nice drive that would result in the only points of the quarter, a 32 yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Miami's offense would still not be able to get anything going on their first possession of the 2nd quarter. The Miami defense would make a huge play though, D'Yoni Hill would intercept a pass and return it 33 yards to set-up the Canes offense. The Canes would need 7 plays to only go 25 yards, but Damien Martinez would punch it in from 1 yard out for a 7-3 lead. After a couple punts, Florida St would have the ball again this time they would be stopped on 4th down from inside the 5 yard line to keep the score 7-3 at the half. "Our offense was not good in the first half," said Coach Dealer, "we were having trouble blocking their defensive line and it was killing us whether we were trying to run the ball or pass the ball. I told the guys if we didn't get that figured out, it was going to be a long second half."
Well, it was a loooooonnnngggg second half for the most part as Florida St would routinely be getting pressure on the Hurricanes. After the Hurricanes were unable to do anything with the first possession, the Seminoles would capitalize and score on a 14 yard TD run to go up 10-7. The Miami offense finally got going, however Cam Ward would force a pass into double coverage and it would be intercepted. Florida St would then go up 17-7 on a long 56 yard TD pass. Miami's offensive line would be the story of this game as they would give up 7 sacks and numerous hits to Ward. Florida St would go up 24-7 after a 35 yard rushing TD and things were looking really bad for the Hurricanes. Miami would get a big 90 yard TD pass to cut the lead to 24-14 and after stopping Florida St would have the ball again. This time the Canes would almost hit on another huge pass play but the LB would make an incredible play to knock the pass away and end the game at a 24-14. "We just got dominated up front," said Dealer, "we did not give our QB or RB's time to make plays for us and that really hurt."
Miami will look to rebound in their next games.
