Liberty Powers Through Kennesaw State with Explosive Second Quarter

First Half: Owls get ran over.

The opening quarter saw a competitive start, with both teams struggling to find offensive rhythm. Liberty's defense, led by Defensive end TJ Bush, pressured Kennesaw State’s quarterback, Davis Bryson, throughout the first half, forcing several errant throws. However, Bryson and the Owls still managed to make some key plays. Kennesaw State struck first late in the first quarter when Bryson connected with wide receiver Qua Ashley for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Ashley catch was one of the few successful downfield plays for Kennesaw State in the game, and it gave the Owls a 7-0 lead early in the contest.

Liberty responded in the second quarter with a methodical drive capped off by a 27-yard field goal by kicker, Colin Karhu. The Flames’ defense forced some key turnovers that the offense was able to turn into points on the other side. The game was taken over by the Flames 2 headed monster in the backfield, led by Quinton Cooley and Billy Lucas, and on the very next position for Liberty, Billy Lucas took off for an 86-yard touchdown run on his first carry of the game to give the Flames a 10-7 lead.

Kennesaw State struggled to protect their quarterback and gave the ball right back to a high-powered Liberty offense. With the Flames set up nice inside the redzone, Kaidon Salter found Reese Smith in the corner of the endzone for a 9-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 17-7. Liberty wasn't done there, the defense was showing out in the second quarter, and with another 3 and out by the Owls offense, Liberty special teams wanted to make a mark on this game, Victor Venn, a speedy returner, bolted 73-yards on a punt return for a touchdown.

Kennesaw State offense needed to find some juice and give their defense a break, however, Liberty was flying around on the defensive side of the ball when Davis Bryson forced a ball inside and was picked off once again. with Liberty having the ball once again, Quinton Cooley wasted no time to put more points up on the board to increase the lead to, 31-7. with under 2 minutes to go in the first half, Kennesaw State was looking for a late score to go into halftime, The Flames defense had Davis Bryson number today, when Brylan Green picked off Bryson for a second time and this one went for 6 the other way. Just before halftime, Bryson orchestrated one of their best drives, capped by a 25-yard field goal by Kicker Austin Welch. Liberty went into the locker room with a 38-point second quarter and a 38-10 lead.

Second Half: Owls nowhere in sight.

The second half saw Liberty take complete control, capitalizing on both offensive explosiveness and defensive dominance.
Liberty’s first possession of the third quarter was a statement drive and a stamping on this game. Liberty wasted no time after halftime, when Quinton Cooley found the endzone for his second time on an 81-yard touchdown run, giving Liberty a 45-10 lead.
Kennesaw State struggled to get anything going offensively in the second half, as the Liberty defense stiffened.
