The Hurricanes came into their week 8 game with the Louisville Cardinals hoping to get off to a quick start after a bye in week 7. The Miami defense would be the first one to make a big play. On the Cardinals opening possession they would try to take a deep shot, by cornerback D'Yoni Hill would make a nice play on the ball to intercept the pass. The Hurricanes would then put together a 12 play drive that would be capped off by a Damien Martinez 3 yard run, for an early 7-0 lead. The second quarter would start a lot like the first. This time it would be safety Mishael Powell who would intercept a pass in the endzone. Miami would be unable to capitalize on the turnover, however Powell would again pick off another Cardinals pass on the next possession. With just under 2 minutes on the clock the Canes offense would be able to go 10 plays and score on a 17 yard TD pass from Cam Ward to Ray Joseph. The Hurricanes would lead 14-0 at halftime. "Our defense came out and was playing really well in that first half," said Coach Dealer, "we made some big plays on some 1 on 1 throws that we were able to get the best of. Our offense then put two 10+ play drives together that helped get points on the board."
Miami would start the 2nd half with the ball. This time they would only need six plays to score their third touchdown of the day. This time Ward would find tight end Elijah Arroyo for a 7 yard touchdown and a 21-0 lead. Louisville would get their lone touchdown of the day on their next possession. They would go on a 13 play drive that would end with a 5 yard TD pass early in the 4th quarter to cut the lead to 21-7, which is what the final score would end up being. "We played a really good game on all sides of the ball tonight," said Dealer, "I really hope that we can take this momentum and keep it going as we have two tough games coming up in week 9 and 10. I will need to make sure these boys are ready to play."
The Hurricanes will travel to Florida St in Week 9 and then will travel to Durham, NC to take on the Duke Blue Devils.
Louisville had an opportunity to knock off highly touted Miami Hurricanes but just were unable to create enough opportunities to do so.
On defense the Cards limited the powerful Canes offense but while they were able to stuff Miami on 1st & 2nd downs most of the day, 3rd down was another story. As the canes would convert time after time all game.
On offense, even when cards had right play called the Miami defense would make the play to get the ball back either via punt or by getting a turnover.
