In an exciting Mountain West Conference matchup, Wyoming faced off against San Diego State in a game that saw the Aztecs dominate early. San Diego State kicked things off with a well-executed five-minute drive, capped off by a 12-yard touchdown run from Christon, giving them a quick 7-0 lead.
Things took a turn for Wyoming on their first play from scrimmage, as quarterback Svoboda threw an interception, which set the tone for a challenging day ahead. San Diego took advantage of the turnover, adding a field goal to make it 10-0. The Aztecs then rattled off two more touchdowns, pulling ahead 24-0 and putting Wyoming in a deep hole.
Despite their struggles, the Cowboys fought to stay in the game but never managed to erase the double-digit deficit. Late in the fourth quarter, they caught a break when San Diego threw an interception, giving them a glimmer of hope. However, in a frustrating turn of events, Svoboda threw another interception, marking his fifth of the day and extinguishing Wyoming’s chances for a comeback.
In the end, San Diego State emerged victorious with a final score of 52-28, showcasing their offensive firepower and capitalizing on Wyoming's mistakes throughout the game.
In a battle of early season leaders in the Mountain West, The SDSU Aztecs Defeated The Wyoming Cowboys 52-28.
The Aztecs used big plays on both offense and Defense to get out in front early and hold on late.
On the first drive of the game, The Cowboys were ready for the Aztecs and held them to a 4th and inches. Coach Z didn't hesitate going for it, as Marquez Cooper ran for 5 taking it to the 10 and setting up the Aztecs for first and goal.
Again the Cowboys Defense looked to have the Aztecs stopped on 3rd and goal at the 13 but Aztecs Marquez Cooper would find the endzone making it 7-0. As Wyoming got the ball, they were eager to match the Aztecs on the board.
Safety Dalesean Staley had different ideas intercepting Wyoming QB Evan Svobada, leading to another Aztecs score making it 10-0
The Aztecs would stop the pokes again, this time on downs, and follow it with Quick TD between QB Danny O'Neil and WR Louis Brown IV for 87 yards to make it 17-0.
The Pokes would drive on its next possession, starting to build some momentum on Offense but Aztecs S Eric Butler would stop the drive on an INT at their 30 yard line giving the Aztecs the ball.
On the Next Aztecs play, Kenan Christon would take a run 53 yards for A TD to make it 24-0.
From here, the Aztecs used big plays on defense (2 INt's for td's) and a strong running attack to maintain the lead and go on to win 52-28.
The Pokes showed continued Grit and got themselves back in it with 4 minutes to go down 2 possessions but a int for a TD would put the game away for good.
Big Z after the game praised his guys while showing some respect for his opponent. "We got the big plays when we needed them early. There were a couple short yardage situations that went our way and didn't go the Pokes way. The momentum really carried us early. We know the game could of gone either way, coach Liq does a great job with his guys and i wouldn't be surprised if he ran the table the rest of the year."
