It started out well for the WKU Hilltoppers as they were able to drive down the field and put up a 22 yard passing TD to take the early 7-0 lead. UTEP would tie it up to end the 1st quarter and then take the lead mid way through the 2nd quarter with another passing TD. Western did not want to be outdone however so they quickly drove down the field and scored on a 54 yard run from RB Young. The Hilltoppers would hold strong and be able to take the halftime lead with a 44 yard FG with 6 seconds left in the half.
That's where it all fell apart. UTEP would make all the right adjustments and completely shut down the Hilltoppers offense in the 2nd half. Finley tried forcing the ball several times only finding yellow jerseys to complete the passes to. UTEP would walk away with 7 INT's from Finley on the day. Meanwhile the Hilltoppers defense had no answers for the Miners running game and saw their lead slip away to the tune of 20 unanswered points.
"I don't know. We just forced it. We fell behind and felt we had to throw, despite Young have a great day on the ground we just....forced it. Kudos to their coach for a great defensive game in the 2nd half."
