SMU Methodical in Victory at Doak

Article By: Block M

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA -- After some shaky QB play, the Mustangs knew it would be vital to come out and piece together a strong drive early. After receiving the ball just after the toss they would do just that and HB LJ Johnson Jr. would cap off the opening drive with a one yard run to put SMU up 7-0.

SMU QB Preston Stone, who is in the midst of controversy in Dallas over the state of QB play for the Mustangs would dive in the end zone to put SMU ahead 13-0 later in the first quarter. Kicker Collin Rogers would make his first mistake of the season and clank an extra point attempt off the upright to keep the score at 13-0.

While the offense came out looking improved, the SMU defense would give up a big 50-yard pass play to keep their confidence shaky and bring the Seminoles closer at 13-7.

The SMU defense would rebound however, and despite giving a couple more big touchdown pass plays would be the reason the Mustangs got out of Doak Campbell with a win with not one but two goal line stands to stop the Seminoles at the one yard line.

Both times the Mustangs stopped the 'Noles the Mustangs would march down the field and score for the ultimate momentum swings.

In the end, SMU would not punt until their final drive of the game as the defense was complimented by a balanced offense that totaled 273 yards rushing and 493 yards total.

With the win SMU improves to 5-2 and remains unbeaten in the ACC at 3-0.
