DEKALB, Ill. - In a wild Mid-American Conference showdown, Northern Illinois survived a furious Buffalo comeback to secure a heart-stopping 22-20 victory on Saturday afternoon at Huskie Stadium.
The Huskies dominated early, building a 19-0 lead helped by a safety when Bulls quarterback CJ Ogbana mishandled an option pitch in his own end zone. Buffalo refused to go quietly, mounting an impressive comeback behind a balanced attack (159 rushing yards, 163 passing) that eventually gave them the lead late in the fourth quarter.
NIU's offense, which struggled after their hot start, managed to piece together a crucial drive in the final minutes. Kicker Josh Smith split the uprights from 32 yards out with just 35 seconds remaining to put the Huskies up 22-19.
Buffalo had one last chance, but NIU cornerback Marcus Williams intercepted Ogbana's desperate heave with seconds remaining to seal the victory. The Huskies' offense, led by 332 passing yards, proved just enough to overcome their three turnovers and hold off the resilient Bulls.
