In a disappointing outing, Syracuse football faced a daunting challenge on the road at Stanford, suffering a lopsided defeat with a final score of 42-7. The loss marked a tough chapter for the Orange, who struggled to find their footing against a well-prepared Cardinal team.
From the outset, Stanford established dominance, showcasing their power and precision on both sides of the ball. The Orange defense, which had shown flashes of potential earlier in the season, found themselves overwhelmed by Stanford’s relentless offensive assault. The Cardinal built an early lead, capitalizing on mistakes and failing to find a rhythm throughout the first half.
Syracuse managed to score just once, a solitary touchdown that came late in the game, but it was clear that they were outmatched on this occasion. Quarterback play was inconsistent, and the offensive line struggled to protect against Stanford's aggressive front seven, leading to several sacks and hurried throws.
In the post-game press conference, head coach Mark Berokoff expressed his frustration, pointing to the field conditions as a significant factor in the team’s struggles. “The field was an issue today,” he said. “It threw our players off their game. We were not able to execute our plays the way we needed to, and that contributed to our performance. It’s tough to play on a surface that doesn’t feel right, and I think it affected us mentally as much as physically.”
Berokoff's remarks underscored the challenges that teams face when playing in unfamiliar environments. The natural grass at Stanford's home field was reportedly in less-than-ideal condition, and players slipped and struggled to maintain their footing throughout the game. This added an additional layer of difficulty to an already challenging matchup.
Despite the defeat, Berokoff emphasized the need for the team to learn from the experience. “We need to put this behind us and focus on the next steps,” he stated. “We can’t let one loss define us. Our fans deserve better, and we owe it to them and ourselves to improve moving forward.”
The Orange will have to regroup quickly, as they prepare for their upcoming games. With the season still young, the focus will be on addressing the issues that led to the heavy loss in Palo Alto. The team’s resilience will be tested, but there is a sense of determination among the players and coaching staff to bounce back stronger.
As they return home, Syracuse football looks to take the lessons learned from this tough game and apply them as they continue their season. The road ahead may be challenging, but the commitment to improvement remains steadfast as the Orange aim to turn their fortunes around.
Coach Berokoff- Travel and the grass was way to perfect for our guys was an issue, we were not ready for such a beautiful stadium, travel across the country didn't help, we had guys that were jet lagged and maybe a few went out the night before and took in the sites, who knows. Bounce back time.
