In a stunning upset, South Carolina defeated LSU in a hard-fought football battle at Death Valley, securing a 36-23 victory. The Gamecocks came into the game as underdogs but delivered a resilient performance, overcoming the hostile environment of Tiger Stadium, where victories for visiting teams are notoriously difficult to come by.
LSU, known for its intimidating crowd and storied home-field advantage, failed to take momentum early, as the Ganecocks had them trailing 28-17 in the first half. However, South Carolina’s and LSU’s defense made key adjustments in the second half, stifling both potent offenses. Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers led a critical fourth-quarter drive, capped by a touchdown run by Raheim Sanders that sealed the win with just minutes left on the clock.
Death Valley’s energy never wavered, with LSU’s fans trying to will their team to a comeback. But South Carolina’s composure under pressure and ability to execute in key moments proved decisive, silencing the crowd and securing one of the biggest wins in the program’s recent history.
The Tigers hosted South Carolina looking for revenge after last year's 2-pt loss and came out flat. With both their star QB and RB suspended, freshman Rickie Collins got the start for the Tigers with high expectations to hold up the standards set by Nussmeier. Collins never got anything going with no help from the normally stout OLine as the star DEs from the Gamecocks got pressure on almost every dropback. Collins settled in as the game went on but forced 3 unnecessary INTs which ultimately sealed the game late.
The Tiger defense had no answer for the Gamecocks ground game as Raheim "Rocket" Sanders went for 221 yards and 2 TDs while mobile QB Sellers added 2 more TDs on the ground. The Tiger defensive front is seen as soft by many throughout the league and did nothing to prove the doubters wrong. When asked about his defense's play last week, Coach Bucknut was heated and expressed that he will be spending the whole week of practice with the defense to fix their issues.
