LEXINGTON — LaNorris Sellers threw four touchdown passes, Jalon Kilgore reeled in an interception while the Gamecocks held Kentucky to just 80 rushing yards for a 35-21 victory to open Southeastern Conference play and open coach Metro’s SEC coaching career
Raheim Sanders rushed for a 74 yard touchdown late in the third quarter to help break the game open for South Carolina in the SEC head-to-head matchup. For one week, the Gamecocks sit atop the expanded 16-team league and can thank their opportunistic defense for helping make it possible in the nationally televised game.
Jalon Kilgore followed with an interception of starter Brock Vandagriff
South Carolina also rang up seven sacks, capping a defensive performance that held Kentucky to just 80 yards rushing and 222 yards passing.
South Carolina led throughout thanks to Sellers, who threw TD passes of 50 yards to wide-open Nyck Harbor in the first quarter, 70-yarder to Jared Brown, 13-yarder to Huggins-Brice, and a 12-yarder to Adaway III. Sellers completed 19 for 23 and 336 yards.
KEY TAKEAWAY
South Carolina showcased its fierce defensive play with a backfield presence that harassed Brock Vandagriff early and often and blew up other plays before they could develop. That helped Sellers’ early touchdown stand long enough for the Gamecocks to add another TD coming out of the break.
After a bye week during week 1, Kentucky came out slow in their first game of the season. Going down 28-14 by the end of the first half. Nothing seemed to go their way as what looked to be an easy pick 6, was stripped out of the corners hands right before crossing the goal line, resulting in a touchback. From the start of the game to the end, it was obvious that the offense and defense wasn't prepared for an in conference dog fight the first week of play.
The only bright spot on the team seemed to be the special teams as the returner accounted for about 125 return yards through the game. The punter was able to get around 200 punt yards also. Usually you wouldn't want the defense on the field long, and it doesn't look bad in the start of the game if you look at the TOP in the first half. But in reality, South Carolina, was scoring so fast that it seemed like the punter was being put on the field longer than the defense. Kentucky wasn't able to get anything going from start to finish and lost the game by a lot.
They hope to move on from this and look forward to facing the #4 team in the NDL in Georgia. This would be a huge bounce back game and could have Kentucky right where they want to be after this slow start.
