Tuesday night featured an exciting matchup between ACC sweethearts Georgia Tech and the foreboding Kansas State Wildcats. Rookie coach TilnaciousD came into the game looking to end a rollercoaster season on a good note as the Yellow Jackets came off a disappointing loss to UMass to end the regular season.
The Yellow Jackets featured a more conservative offense in this bout, relying on the rushing game as the foundation and capitalizing on what were mostly safe and shallow passes to mix things up. This made Georgia Tech fans hold their breath early on, as Kansas State nailed a field goal on the opening drive then got the ball back after an early failure of the Yellow Jackets to push the ball down the field.
Georgia Tech would rally back in the second quarter, with Haynes King throwing for one touchdown and adding another off a Jamal Haynes rush. With under 30 seconds left in the half, the Yellow Jackets felt confident with a 14-3 lead, until Kansas State rallied with three consecutive long passes to make it 14-10 going into the half.
Georgia Tech would punt after receiving the ball to start the second half, after which Kansas State tacked on another field goal to make it a 14-13 score. All of a sudden, we had a nailbiter. Teams then traded punts, until Georgia tech added another Jamal Haynes rushing touchdown to make it 21-13. He would finish the day with 154 rushing yards and 31 receiving.
Kansas State got the ball back and immediately started driving down the field, capitalizing on opportunity after opportunity until LaMiles Brooks iced the game with an 88-yard pick-6, leaving Georgia Tech just over two minutes to make up a two possession difference. Kansas State turned the ball over on a failed fourth down conversion, allowing GT to run the ball out and secure the W.
Coach TilnaciousD looks to improve on a successful rookie season next year.
K-State came in confident getting their last 2 wins of the year and a simulation to squeak into a bowl game. Georgia Tech matched up well with the Cats and we had ourselves a ball games. Early it looked like both teams didn't want to make the costly mistake and the conservative game plan may have hurt the Cats early on as even though they drove for a 3-0 lead, they fell behind quickly before the half 14-3. Johnson had the handcuffs removed with about 30 seconds left and drove down the field in 3 plays and scored a quick TD to go into the break only down by 4. The second half saw K-state step up on D force a stop and get the ball back. The Cats drove methodically down the field but we're stifled in the red zone and found themselves faced with a 4th and goal from the 1 with most of the 3rd quarter melted away. Coach bearass chose to trust the defense and took the 3 making it 14-13 but more importantly within striking distance if the Jackets happened to put up a TD. After a trade of punts the Jackets punched one in and went up 8. The Wildcats found their pace drove the field and after flirting with disaster a few times earlier turned it over in a costly way to a lurking LB and they took it all the way for a clenching pick 6 putting the Jackets up by what would be the final score 28-13.
