Notre Dame defended the homeland in South Bend versus the Vols today. All season teams have struggled with how to contain the dynamic duo of Squirrel White and Bru McCoy, but the Irish defense solved the riddle, holding White and McCoy to 3 catches each for a combined 80 yards.
The Irish defense struck first on the Vols 1st possession, forcing a fumble. While the offense wasn't at full speed, QB Riley Leonard moved them into scoring position, before the Vols held tight and forced a 19yd FG. Tennessee would start to work the ball a bit in the final 2 minutes of the 1st Q, matching the Irish FG with a 50 yarder from K Josh Turbyville, to make it 3-3 through 1.
The 2nd quarter was all Notre Dame, specifically HB Jeremiyah "Lightning" Love, as he notched 3 TDs, before Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava found WR Chris Brazzell II for a late TD before half, making it 24-10 at the half.
It didn't take long for Notre Dame to assert dominance on offense once again in the 3rd, as Riley Leonard hit WR Kris Mitchell for a 44yd TD strike. Tennesee HB Dylan Sampson and Notre Dame HB Jadarian Price exchanged rushing TDs in the 3rd, then it was FR LB Kyngston Viliamu-Asa who picked off Nico Iamalaeva and returned it 26yds for the score in the closing seconds of the 3rd, to make it 45-17 Notre Dame.
The fireworks weren't over yet however, as Coach Garvinole decided to flip the script and dialed up a 55yd TD pass between Iamaleava and HB Dylan Sampson, on the same play that Jeremiyah Love scored from 58yds out in the 1st half! But QB Riley Leonard put the game to bed with 5 to go in the game, when he quickly answered, hitting TE Mitchell Evans for an 83 yd TD.!
