Leon is back! Sight unseen during the draft, Carman took Sam Houston from an airport....and got home to see a gem of a DE thats the best DT on the team....Leon's son, Jevon Leon!!
SMSU's Jevon Leon Jr (DE/DT) just turned 21, and Coach Carman and Leon Sr took him out to The Basement bar in Orlando.
Yes, that bar, from UCF's winless season, that was giving away free drinks til a W.
Yes, that Leon. He's now retired, living in Houston pulling for the Texans WR corps, for the nearby Sam Houston Bearkats, where his son goes to school...and not blaming teammates for not falling on the ball.
Yes, that Carman. He's now an uncle, lives in Austin, TX, has been to a funeral of someone that worked at Sam Houston State, has grey in his beard, and still doesn't wear jean shorts or drink milk....and knows a joke or two about sheep and Australians. And that's where the real life facts will depart us.
Coach Carman took the team to his home town of Orlando. Did they go to Disney World and drink around the world at Epcot? Oh, no. He gave them the locals Orlando tour and took them to Blue Springs (where the Creature from the Black Lagoon was filmed...if you didn't feel old, and got that reference, and still think Brooke Shields has it...umm, we might be getting old..er).
He also sang a stirring rendition of Hunstvillian Rhapsody....Is this the real life? Is it just fantasy? Could it be both....with no escape from reality?
Bearakat, Bearakat, will you do the Fandango? Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very frightening me. Galileo...
Speaking of frightening, lets get to the opening game of Coach Carman's tenure...
First, to answer a question many will have....the win or loss did not come down to a Leon fumble. There was a WMU fumble where the ball went through a few hands, but it was hard to tell just who's hands touched it. While, it would have been cooler if one of Leon's teammates fell on the ball, it wasn't his fumble. And UCF didn't get the ball back, to try to get within 1 score.
The Bearkat's got the ball, and the first drive included a few third down conversions and a fourth down conversion from just beyond FG range. Carman said it was the best drive he's had in a decade, including against the computer. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there.
The Broncos scored 21 unanswered, and never looked in doubt once they got the lead. 3 interceptions to none, didn't really help either.
WMU looks very solid for a 100th pick in the draft, and Joker was very solid on defense. Good luck the rest of the season!
