NORFOLK, VA. - Old Dominion returned to form in their home opener for this season as they down Akron 30-7. The Monarchs are now 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the BEEFY pool games thus far.

QB Grant Wilson led the way for the Monarchs with 183 passing yards and 2 TD, including a beautiful 46 yard catch and ran by TE Jalen Butler where he made one juke that caused 6 Akron defenders to miss or fly by.

RB Aaron Young wasn't satisfied with his performance, but he still finished with 27 carries, 130 yards and 2 TD. He also reeled in 6 catches for 57 yards and a TD.

After racking up 10 tackles last week, LB Jason Henderson totaled 7 tackles today along with a sack and an interception. Henderson has been the defense's leader and came out with a renewed fire after last week's performance. Rumors of a defensive team meeting led by Henderson circulated after their disappointing performance last week. Henderson did not comment on whether the rumors were true or not. CB Will Jones II also had an interception this game.

The Monarchs head into a week 4 bye and then prepare to take on Florida Atlantic on the road for one last game before a conference contest. The Monarchs will open up conference play week 6 at Coastal Carolina. Additional BEEFY cup pool games will be played but are TBA.

Zips Trounced by Monarchs

Article By: priest19

In a challenging road matchup, the Akron Zips fell to Old Dominion by a score of 30-7 on Saturday. Despite entering the game with high hopes, Akron’s defense struggled to contain Old Dominion’s offensive attack, leading to a decisive defeat.

From the outset, it was clear that the Zips' defensive unit was having difficulty containing Old Dominion's offense. The Monarchs, led by a potent offensive scheme, capitalized on Akron's defensive lapses throughout the game. Old Dominion managed to score consistently, racking up 30 points and leaving the Zips' defense scrambling for answers.

The Akron defense, which had shown promise in previous games, was unable to stop Old Dominion’s offensive plays, allowing several long drives and crucial third-down conversions. The Monarchs’ ability to execute in critical moments exposed the gaps and weaknesses in Akron’s defensive strategies.

On the offensive side, Akron struggled to match Old Dominion’s scoring pace. The Zips' lone touchdown came too late to mount a serious comeback, as the offense could not find its rhythm or sustain drives effectively throughout the game.

With this loss, Akron’s focus will now turn to regrouping and addressing the defensive issues that plagued them in this game. As the season progresses, the Zips will need to make significant adjustments to improve their defensive performance and become more competitive in future matchups.
