Murfreesboro, TN (AP) - The MTSU Blue Raiders opened their season in what they consider to be disappointing fashion today, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. "59 points in an opener, frankly I am embarrassed, usually offenses take weeks to gel so to give up 59 today in front of a sold-out crowd, it's disappointing," said coach Dietz after the game was over. The Huskies started the game off with a bang intercepting QB Nick Vattiato on the opening drive of the game. After that MTSU played catch up for four quarters, coming to within 3 points in the first half a few times but never able to get over the hump.
The quarterback for the Huskies put on a master class on efficiency, at one point in the game he was 12/12 passing for 300 yards and four TD's before getting a little sloppy late in the game when it was already out of hand. The player of the game was NIU play making WR on the outside, who had 4 receptions for 223 yards and 3 TD's.
In the loss QB Nick Vattiato set a school record for passing yards with 476 yards passing and 2 TD's. Leading the way for the Raiders was stud Tight End Hank Willis with 7 receptions for 144 yards and made some awesome catches in traffic. MTSU goes back to the drawing board as they play Univ of Charlotte next week in a battle to get a W on the board.
