The Wyoming Cowboys faced a tough challenge at home against the Iowa State Cyclones, suffering a 35-3 defeat in front of their home crowd at War Memorial Stadium. The Cowboys struggled on both sides of the ball as the Cyclones dominated from start to finish.
Iowa State wasted no time asserting their dominance, scoring on their first drive with a methodical 75-yard march that ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Rocco Becht to wide receiver Jaylin Noel. The Cyclones' defense then quickly forced a three-and-out, setting up their offense for another scoring opportunity. Midway through the first quarter, Iowa State running back Abu Sama III broke free for a 40-yard touchdown run, putting the Cyclones up 14-0. Wyoming’s offense struggled to find rhythm, managing only a few short gains before being forced to punt again.
In the second quarter, the Cowboys' defense held the Cyclones to a field goal attempt, but Iowa State’s kicker was true from 42 yards, extending the lead to 17-0. Wyoming finally got on the board late in the half with a 38-yard field goal by kicker John Hoyland, but it was little consolation as they trailed 17-3 at halftime.
The second half saw more of the same, with Iowa State continuing to control the game. Becht connected with wide receiver Daniel Jackson on a 30-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter, increasing the Cyclones' lead to 24-3. The Cowboys' offense, led by quarterback Andrew Peasley, couldn’t find any answers against a stingy Cyclones defense, struggling to move the ball and converting just 2 of 12 third-down attempts. Iowa State continued to pile on the points, with Sama III adding his second touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Cyclones capped off the scoring with a late touchdown pass from backup quarterback JJ Kohl to tight end Tyler Moore, making it 35-3.
The Cowboys were thoroughly outplayed in all phases of the game. Their offense managed just 150 total yards, while the Cyclones racked up over 400 yards, including 220 on the ground. The loss drops Wyoming to 2-2 on the season, while Iowa State improves to 3-1.
Wyoming will look to regroup as they head into conference play next week, hoping to bounce back and correct the mistakes that plagued them in this lopsided defeat.
